Hansa Meyer Shipway Chile Launches Desert 1 Development Project to Transform Mining Logistics in Antofagasta

Antofagasta, Chile – October 2025

Hansa Meyer Shipway Chile is proud to announce the successful launch of its Desert 1 Development Project, a strategic initiative aimed at revolutionizing mining logistics in northern Chile. The project was initiated in early 2024 and fully financed through internal resources.

Located 40 kilometers outside the port of Antofagasta, Desert 1 is designed to significantly relieve the limited staging areas within the harbor by establishing a dedicated hazardous goods storage facility for the mining industry.

The site spans 60,000 square meters of storage space in the Atacama Desert, positioned at a key logistics junction that connects the Chilean hinterland with Argentina.

The project required 22 months of intensive coordination with 12 different Chilean authorities, including the acquisition of commercial, customs, construction, and environmental permits. This complex approval process underscores the pioneering nature of the initiative.

In March 2024, the Hansa Meyer Global Management Team, together with the Chilean leadership, visited the site to inspect the first foundations, marking a major milestone in the development.

“Pioneering work demands perseverance and a clear focus on the next step – even when faced with delays in regulatory processes,” said Jan-Dirk Schuisdziara, Managing Director of Hansa Meyer Global.

“We are proud to have successfully delivered this strategically important project and extend our sincere thanks to our Chilean team for their outstanding work.”

Special recognition goes to Eduardo Segura and Marco Gomez, whose leadership and dedication were instrumental in the project’s success.
